Not much going on

Hello all,

I realized I haven’t posted in a while so I figured I would drop you all a quick note to let you know that I haven’t forgotten about you…it’s just been a real busy couple of weeks at my new job which doesn’t leave me a whole lot of time to dig out new information on Camping.

Hopefully things will calm down soon and I can get back to my first love…Camping in New Jersey!

Mossberg SuperBantam

Good Morning all,

My older son and I went out this past Saturday morning and did a couple of things:

1. We signed up for membership to the local gun club.
2. We signed him up for the Marksmenship program they have.
3. We ordered his first shotgun.

We ended up ordering him a Mossberg SuperBantam because he wanted a shotgun that was camouflage and because it’s a “combo” which just means it comes with a smooth barrel as well as a rifled barrel.

I was very surprised that he was willing to wait 3 weeks to get it since there was a very nice wood finish 20 guage Mossberg youth model sitting right there. But he said he wanted the camouflage and the two barrels enough to wait.

So he is finally going to get it and we are all signed up for the marksmenship program and the gun club in general. W

We will probably wait until he gets the shotgun before we go to the range.

Winter is Officially Here

Good Morning All,

Well winter officially arrived in my neck of the woods last night when almost an inch of snow finally fell to the ground and put a very light layer over everything. It was pretty and all that but if I had my way that would be the only snowfall of the year and the weather would start warming up about…..NOW!

I’m not a grinch or anything like that I’m just not a big fan of the white stuff. It’s beautiful and all that but it makes driving around a pain in the butt.

The good thing is that while this white powder was falling to the ground my wife and I started planning our camping trips for this season. We already have several booked due to cub scouts, boy scouts (my older son crosses over in February) and the now annual boys trip to Stokes State Forest.

We have also tentatively planned a family weekend trip once a month starting in May and going through September. Obviously this could and probably will change as it did last year due to other stuff like sports and other activities but hopefully we’ll get out at least once every 6 weeks or so.

Remington Youth Model

Good Morning all,

Well I’ve finally decided I’m going to end up buying my son a Remington Youth Model 20 guage shotgun even though the one guy I talked to recommended just getting him right into a Remington 870 12 guage.

Reason being that I had my son hold my Mossberg 500A 12 guage and the shotgun was just to heavy for him. He would pick it up and by the time he had it seated properly in his shoulder and had his cheek on the butt he could only last a second or two before he had to put it down. And I know that the Mossberg is shorter and lighter then a Remington 870 so that’s out.

I have also gotten some details about the gun range closest to us so we are signing up as members this weekend. What’s cool is that they have a Junior Marksmen program there which we are also signing up for. This program will teach them gun safety, gun maintenance (I think) and proper marksmenship starting with air rifles, then .22’s, then centerfire rifles and finally shotguns.

Well that’s about it for today…have a great weekend and I’ll talk to you on Monday.

I’m back

Good Morning All,

I apologize for the long hiatus but my life got really, really busy there for a while with the holidays and a new job all occuring right in the same couple of weeks. So it’s taken me a lot longer to get back in the saddle so to speak then I thought.

I will begin posting on an almost daily basis again starting today and I will begin publishing the Gazette again starting the next scheduled issue.

For some reason I have recently been on a mission to get more information on Gun Control Laws their supporters and their opponents in the last couple of weeks. This is probably due to my son’s desire to go hunting and the research I have been doing for that. I am telling you this because I don’t want you to be surprised if the “Hunting” section of this blog start carrying information and critiques of the information I am finding.

If you find yourself not liking what I say or how I feel about Guns/Hunting/etc… please discontinue reading any posts I make in the Hunting category and just stick to the posts in the NJ Camping Category.

Starting Out

Good Morning all,

Well since I have absolutely no idea about anything related to hunting (except that I like Venison!) I started thinking about who I know that is a hunter and who’s opinion I would value.

I thought of a guy I know named Al. Al and I have known each other for several years as our kids play various sports together and are in scouts together. I know that Al is a smart guy who if very safety conscious and that hey hunts on a regular basis. I also know that his older son (same age as mine) just recently killed his first buck.

I have bent Al’s ear several times over the last couple of weeks about anything and everything hunting related as well as youth hunting related. He is the one who told me about the Hunter’s License, the Youth Hunter’s License and how to go about getting them.

I recently asked him about what kind of firearms to get for myself and my son. I need a hunting rifle as well since I currently only own a .222 rifle and a 12 gauge Mossberg 500a neither of which are good for hunting.

I had heard that Remington 870’s were a good deer hunting shotgun and asked him about them, he agreed that was a good way for me to start and he recommended a youth model shotgun in the 16 to 20 gauge range for my son. We also talked about me getting the 870 for myself first and having my son shoot it a little bit to see if his arms are long enough and also if he can handle the kick of a 12 gauge. Al said it can’t hurt but that he would definitely recommend a 16 to 20 gauge youth model for my son.

So I am currently Christmas shopping and have decided to buy the 870 for myself, wrap it up and let my son open it on Christmas Day. I will tell him that it is for me but that I am going to let him shoot it to see if it fits him, if he can handle it and then based on that result we will purchase him the same firearm or a youth model.

New Category

Good Morning all,

Well, I added a new category of information to this blog this morning for the same reason I haven’t posted anything in the last week or so…Hunting.

My older son is 10 years old and here in the Garden State you can apply for a Youth Hunter’s License at 10. My son has been wanting to go hunting for a couple of years now and so he and I have been spending some time over the last week going through the Hunter Education course material necessary to get the license.

Since I have never been hunting in my life researching not only what is necessary to complete the license info but also what type of firearm to buy for me as well as for him, what type of game to hunt, where to hunt, when to hunt, etc… so I haven’t had any time to post here.

So since this new area will probably be consuming a considerable amount of my free time over the next couple of months (since I am getting my Hunters License as well) I decided to add a new category on the blog and share some of the information I learn with you all.

I will try my best to keep up on what is going on in the State from a camping perspective so as to not turn this into a Hunting blog!
